Whether you're a gel nail convert, pigment your nails yourself at home,or oasis't stepped foot inside ablast salonin years, there's a practiced take a chance you've still heard ofSNS nails. While themanicure trendhas been around for a while, its popularity has sky-rocketed in recent years due to the belief that it'south a healthier culling to aShellacmanicure.

To find out if it lives upwards to the hype and whether or not we should all be embracing thetrendingdip powder manicure, we spoke to ii topAustralianmanicurists - Bernadette Leva and Sally HansenNail Expertand Make Administrator, Alison Bowhill-Hayes.

What are SNS nails?

In short, "SNS stands forSignature Boom Systems and is a type of manicure that involves repeated dipping of your nails into a powder that and then hardens on your nail," explains Leva.

How SNS differs from Shellac

According to Bowhill-Hayes, the distinction between the two nail trends is uncomplicated: "Shellacis a [product] name for a hybrid smooth (one-halfnail polish, half gel) made by CreativeNail Design(CND). Subsequently completing a standardmanicure, abase coatis applied to the nail then cured under a LED lamp for ten seconds. Afterward, 2 colour coats are applied before being cured for 60 seconds. To stop, atop glazeis applied to each boom and cured for another sixty seconds."

Alternatively, "SNS involves applying agel baseover three-quarters of the nail, earlier dipping each nail into the natural set powder. Adjacent, agel baseis applied to each smash before it's dipped into a gel-baseddip pulverization. To finish, asealeris practical to each nail before they're shaped and groomed, and aelevation coatis applied," says Bowhill-Hayes.

Why SNS is then pop

Both Bowhill-Hayes and Leva believe SNS'southward popularity tin can be attributed to the fact that no LED lamp orUV lightis needed to set the smooth. As a result, SNS is "touted as a healthy or natural alternative toShellacorgel manicures, when in actual fact the concept has been around for many years and is only an adjusted application ofacrylic nails," explains Bowhill-Hayes. "Essentially, SNS is asuper gluethat's applied to nails so dipped into a polymer (acrylic powder)."

We think another reasonSNS nailshave risen in popularity is that they easily last anywhere between three to four weeks with none of the telltale lifting that'south synonymous with agel polisharound the second-week marker.

Side note: Personally, while I prefer the wait and feel ofShellac nails,SNS manicurestake get my new go-to simply because of their longevity (not to mention the competitive cost point and all-encompassing color range).

Does SNS impairment nails?

Like most in-salon manicures, impairment to your nails most commonly occurs during the removal process. To remove SNS, your nails demand to exist soaked in acetone for 10 to 15 minutes, which can make them dehydrated and brittle. To combat this, make sure you regularly apply a rejuvenating nail serum and/or cuticle oil to continue both your nail and nail bed nourished and strong. One of our favourite nail serums at the moment is Sally Hansen Nail Rehab.

Bowhill-Hayes notes that impairment can too be acquired if thenail technician drills the nails in prep, fails to groom the nails well, or files and scrapes the natural nails at any point. And then make certain you lot choose a well-trained manicurist!
